SPECIAL EVENTS

  • A Love of Nature

Saturday, December 10 from 9 a.m. – 12 p.m.

Angel Oak Tree and John’s Island Regional Library

Join a family-friendly gathering to discuss a shared love and respect for nature. Meet first at the Angel Oak Tree for a period of reflection with members of the Gullah Geechee community, then move to John’s Island Regional Library to enjoy refreshments and listen to Dr. Drew Lanham discuss his recent memoir, The Home Place: Memoirs of a Colored Man’s Love Affair with Nature. Lanham is a conservationist and professor of wildlife ecology at Clemson University who grew up in Edgefield, S.C. The Home Place is a meditation on nature and belonging, as well as a riveting exploration of the contradictions of black identity in the rural South – and in America today. Copies of his book will be available to purchase, and a portion of proceeds will go toward Charleston Friends of the Library. The program will conclude with a presentation about efforts by the South Carolina Aquarium to protect coastal communities and cultures from the threat of rising sea levels. This program is co-sponsored by Audubon South Carolina, Charleston Natural History Society and the South Carolina Aquarium, in partnership with CCPL. Call 843-559-1945 for more information.
