Brad Martin, Chief Technical Officer, Engineered Marine Coatings, Inc.

Engineered Marine Coatings (EMC2) began when University of South Carolina grads Jon Boswell and Brad Martin were cleaning up a secondhand 17-foot day boat. The paint on the boat was peeling, dirty, and chalky, and the craft needed some serious TLC to get back in the water. The duo launched their company to meet the need for better marine coatings. They started EMC2 in 2010 while both working other full-time jobs, and sunk $1,500 and a whole lot of nights, weekends, and lunch breaks into getting it off the ground.

After graduating from Charleston’s Harbor Accelerator Program (the 2014 cohort), they teamed up with industry vets Steve Schultz and Jim Ewing to produce and distribute the Quantum line. They have also received funding and support from SCRA and are now housed at IdeaLabs at the University of South Carolina (the Office of Economic Engagement). What a cool South Carolina story!
