A Glorious Cause: Chef & Farmer Mathew Raiford discusses Lowcountry Gullah Cuisine during the American Revolution

Join us on Thursday, May 14 at 2:00 p.m. at the Southern Georgetown Library (4187 Powell Road, Georgetown, SC 29440) for a special presentation by Chef/Farmer Matthew Raiford on historic Gullah foodways during the American Revolution. He will also bring food samples of Reezy-Peezy made with authentic Carolina Gold rice alongside a choice of dipping sauces for attendees.
Chef Raiford lives in Brunswick, Georgia, where he operates a generations-old family farm called Gilliard Farm. His family hails from Gilliard, South Carolina, which is in the historic Plantersville area of Georgetown County, and his ancestors were associated with Chicora Wood. He makes regular trips to the Georgetown Library to conduct genealogical research. A former Associate Professor of Culinary Arts at the College of Coastal Georgia, Chef Raiford is knowledgeable, talented, and enthusiastic. He is author of the cookbook, Bress ‘n’ Nyam: Gullah Geechee Recipes from a Sixth Generation Farmer, profiled in Bon Appetit.
