Celebrating Native American Traditions Past and Present: A Cultural Journey

October 21, 2023 @ 10:00 am - 2:30 pm

In an effort to honor and celebrate the rich tapestry of Native American traditions, the Laurens County Museum is proud to present the “Celebrating Native American Traditions Past and Present” series of programs, set to begin on October 21, 2023. Sponsored by the South Carolina Arts Commission, the PAIA Lower Eastern Cherokee Nation of SC, and the Laurens County Museum, this series will bring together artists, performers, and tribal leaders from across South Carolina to share their heritage and cultural legacy.

The inaugural event will kick off with an enlightening lecture scheduled for 10:00 am on October 21. Chief Harold Hatcher of the Waccamaw People will join Chief Dexter Sharp of the PAIA Lower Eastern Cherokee Nation, offering insights into their respective tribal histories and cultural significance. The captivating dialogue will set the tone for a day filled with discovery and appreciation of Native American culture.

Following the lecture, the day will unfold with two engaging programs, beginning at 1:30 pm. Renowned Cherokee potter, Billy Lightwalker Fulcher, will demonstrate the artistry involved in Cherokee pottery, providing a glimpse into the age-old techniques and craftsmanship of this treasured tradition. Subsequently, Marcy Hayden, a skilled beadwork artisan from the Pee Dee Indian Tribe, will share the nuances of Native Beadwork and lead a hands-on beading workshop at 2:30 pm. To participate in this immersive workshop, registration is essential due to limited space. Interested individuals can register for the beading workshop by contacting (864) 681-3678 or via email at [email protected].

The celebration will continue Saturday, October 28, 2023, featuring additional programs and performances. Attendees will have the opportunity to witness flute playing and making, explore the intricate art of basketry, and learn about the cultural significance of dream catchers. Following these demonstrations, participants can engage in hands-on workshops focused on basketry and dream catcher crafting. Please note that registration is necessary for the workshops to ensure an enriching experience for all involved.

Looking ahead, more programs and educational school field trips to the PAIA tribal grounds are planned for March 2024, ensuring an ongoing celebration of Native American heritage and traditions.

These culturally enriching programs are open to the public and come at no cost. For additional information and inquiries, please contact (864) 681-3678 or visit www.LaurensCountyMuseum.org and follow updates on Facebook.

Come join the cultural journey as we celebrate the enduring legacy of the Native Americans and their vibrant traditions, past and present.
