Dr. Richard Almeida, Co-Director of The Belle Baruch Institute for South Carolina Studies, will focus deeply on the Declaration’s Preamble, exploring why the iconic phrase “all men are created equal” was never intended as a literal description of early American society. Instead, it served as a radical moral claim: that ordinary citizens possess the ultimate right to judge whether their government’s power is legitimate.
