Search for a Spanish Shipwreck: Celebrating 500 Years of South Carolina History

Join historians and archaeologists for a public lecture exploring the high-stakes underwater search in Winyah Bay and the Santee Delta for the Capitana—the lost flagship of Lucas Vázquez de Ayllón’s 1526 expedition. If discovered, it would mark the oldest known European shipwreck in the continental United States.
Featured speakers include 16th-century Southeastern archaeology expert Dr. Chester DePratter and South Carolina State Underwater Archaeologist James Spirek.
