Everything You Should Know To Bundle Up In Style This Season
December 11, 2015By Brian Maynor
Layering up for cold weather is a no-brainer, but sometimes throwing on the same old coat and scarf can get old.
This year extend your personality and personal style to every element of your outfit, including your coat, scarf, hat and other cold weather accessories. Here are a few examples to get your creative juices flowing:
1.   The Maximalist. If you’re a boundary pusher who loves taking your look to the next level mixing textures is the way to go when bundling up for cold weather. Just keep in mind that when creating a look with multiple fabrics like suede, fur, metallic and wool keep the palette small. Not that everything has to be monochromatic, but they should all be in the same color family. This will keep your look sleek and chic instead of all over the place.
2. Â Â Tout Noir. Currently my style of choice, all-black outfits can be overbearing and frankly boring if everything is the same shade and material. To pull off this classic rocker vibe mix leather, fur and cashmere. By mixing high-end materials you elevate your look from one note to the lux-level.
3. Â Â Classic Revisited. Suits are easy ensembles to pull on, but shake them up with bold patterns or embellished fabrics. A jacquard suit can be grounded and balanced with a simple turtleneck, but instead of a classic coat opt for a statement one. Be sure to opt for one in neutral shade in order to keep your look composed. Also keep your accessories minimal since your suit will do most of the talking.
4.   Volume Turned Up. If you tend toward flowing, bohemian-inspired pieces, the natural choice for your winter layers is all about adding extra volume. Since your palette will be mainly earth tones match that with natural textures like shearing coats, wool blanket scarves and denim. When you’re piling on the volume you need the mix of material to give your look and your shape dimension and definition.
5.   Play On Proportions. When you’re adding layers this winter, don’t be afraid to think outside the box, especially when it comes to proportions. Adding a short vest over a long topcoat will create an original look and if you really want to take it over the top swap out your short gloves for longer opera-length ones. Breaking lines are a great way to focus attention where you lack natural curves.
Bundling up against the cold may be second nature, but it doesn’t have to be boring. This year shake up your usual routine with a little creativity and drama. Experimentation will do you good and help you find new ways to wear pieces you already own.
