Fall’s tricky trends
October 8, 2015By Brian Maynor
Most people love the changing seasons because it’s a chance to try new things, and this fall will be no exception.
Some of the most common trends sweeping retail are a little outside the norm and will definitely push you out of your comfort zone, but don’t worry. There are trendy options for every level of adventurer.
Here’s what you need to know about being on trend this fall:
1. Frayed hems. These hems, also called ‘raw hems’, are going to be everywhere this fall, particularly with denim. Most commonly, you will find them on cropped jeans for both guys and girls, as well as on skirts and they come in options from the barely noticeable to totally destroyed. The key to pulling this off is to find the amount of fray that feels comfortable for you and pair it with something classic. Think of it as the next level of mixing denim and formal. You’re just adding one more element of contrast.
2. Daytime Sparkle. Whether it’s Lurex, that sparkly metallic fabric most often seen around the holidays, or sequins, this fall is all about adding some sparkle and shine to your daytime outfit. No matter how you choose to sparkle you can find subtle monochromatic options or bold, vibrant colorful ones. The choice depends on your comfort level with glitter, and of course the situation.
3. A nod to Mod. From geometric dresses to patchwork denim and coats, this season will be full of mod-inspired pieces. So whether you choose an embellished high-neck mini-dress, or a patchwork topcoat if you’re tired of floral prints these blocks of color are the answer.
4. Turtlenecks. This is probably the only ‘must have’ item to add to your fall wardrobe because it is simple, classic and everywhere. Whether you layer it under another top or wear as a standalone piece the perfect turtleneck may take time to find, but it will be worth the investment. If you like fitted turtlenecks make sure the fabric has some stretch in it so it keeps its shape as you pull it on and off because if it gets stretched out the look is ruined. If fitted turtlenecks are a little too revealing, oversized options are also in style. So look for an open-weave in soft fabrics that cascade around you, enveloping you in warmth and cozy luxury.
5. Daytime Pajamas. Most of us would like to roll out of bed ready for the day, especially as the temperatures drop, and while that may never happen, this trend is a close second. Pajama-inspired tops and pants have been in and out of style for several seasons and it doesn’t look like they are going anywhere. While you may not want to channel your inner Selena and wear an entire pajama set to the office, one piece won’t be a problem to incorporate.
Fall is a time for breaking out new pieces and this one is no different, but this year instead of relying on your comfortable, predictable options branch out and trying something new. While it may be scary and require a little more trial-and-error to find the perfect pieces; the sense of accomplishment is well worth the effort when you find a new look that you love and works perfectly with your style.
