July 7, 2014GREENVILLE, SC – The Rotary Club of Greenville awarded Ellen Featherstone the first ever “Service Above Self” scholarship.
The “Service Above Self” scholarship is a renewable grant of up to $5,000 per year for four years. It is awarded to a graduating high school senior in Greenville County who has shown exceptional community service and academic performance.
Featherstone graduated from J.L. Mann High School with Highest Honors. She is a Palmetto Fellows Recipient and an AP Scholar of Distinction. While a student, Featherstone was involved in Nationals Honors Society, student council, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, and a member of the tennis team for 5 years. She has been an active member in the community since a very early age. She became a Girl Scout in kindergarten and continued to earn the highest scouting award, the GS Gold Award. She refurbished a GAIHN home in the Greenville community.
She then became the Vice President of Service of the National Honor Society. She contributed in the planning and “flip” of a transitional home within the JL Mann community. In the course of two days, the house was cleaned, repainted, and landscaped.
As a member of student council, Featherstone raised money for Arizona Children’s Charities, the Cancer Survivors Park, and J. L. Mann’s after school tutoring program. She also participated in Class 7 of Youth Leadership Greenville, Hugh O’Brien Youth Leadership Program, and the Student Athlete Leadership Program.
Featherstone actively volunteers with her church as a Sunday school leader, a church basketball volunteer, and a LEAD team member for youth ministry. In her free time, she enjoys reading, photography, and hiking in the Blue Ridge Mountains.
