Flight of the Dove Celebrates 20 Years of Riding with Purpose
August 6, 2025Not even the rain could dampen the spirit of this year’s Flight of the Dove, as 255 cyclists from South Carolina, North Carolina, and Georgia took to the roads on Saturday, August 2, raising an impressive $52,415 for VIA Health Partners – Laurens County.
Despite the showers, riders and volunteers remained upbeat and focused on the mission—supporting compassionate end-of-life care for families across the region.
“The weather may not have been ideal, but our riders showed up with determination and heart,” said Tom Atwood, Vice President of Philanthropy. “The cause is worth every mile, and we’re incredibly grateful to everyone who braved the rain to make the 20th anniversary ride a success.”
Celebrating two decades of impact, Flight of the Dove has grown into a tradition in Laurens County. Riders were offered multiple route options—14, 30, 50, and 62 miles—as well as a 50-mile “challenge” course with added elevation. Along the way, they enjoyed rest stops staffed by encouraging volunteers, safety support from local crews, and a post-ride celebration with food, music, and fellowship at Presbyterian College’s Bailey Memorial Stadium.
Many participants return year after year, drawn by both the scenic views and the opportunity to ride in honor or memory of loved ones who received hospice care.
Funds raised from the event directly support VIA Health Partners – Laurens County’s nonprofit mission of compassionate care and helping ensure that no one is denied the clinical support they need because of inability to pay. The organization provides hospice care, palliative care, bereavement counseling, caregiver support, and spiritual guidance for families facing the most difficult of life’s journeys.
With the 20th Flight of the Dove ride now in the books, organizers are already looking ahead energized by the passion of the cycling community and the meaningful work that lies ahead. Rain or shine, this ride has proven it’s about more than the miles—it’s about the mission.
The VIA Health Partners – Laurens County team serves patients in Laurens County, Newberry County, Greenwood County, and Saluda County. The organization’s hospice house, which serves highly acute patients, is located at 1304 Springdale Drive, Clinton, SC 29325.
