Flynn Appointed Interim Senior Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs at USC Upstate

SPARTANBURG, SC – Dr. Clif Flynn has been appointed to serve as interim senior vice chancellor for academic affairs at the University of South Carolina Upstate. His appointment is effective July 1, 2015 to June 30, 2016. A national search for a permanent senior vice chancellor for academic affairs will be launched in the fall.
As chief academic officer, Flynn will be a member of the Chancellor’s cabinet and will have responsibility for all academic programs in the four colleges and schools, the library, faculty recruitment, development, and evaluation, and academic program development and approval.
“Dr. Flynn is a valued member of the USC Upstate community and I am delighted that he has accepted this position,” said Chancellor Tom Moore. “His academic experience and commitment to USC Upstate will be critical in helping the University move forward in a number of very important ways.”
Flynn, who has been at USC Upstate since 1988, currently serves as associate vice chancellor for faculty development and director of graduate studies where he provides administrative leadership and support for Academic Affairs initiatives, including curriculum and program development, faculty development, general education, academic outreach, and faculty welfare. He previously served as a professor of sociology and chair of the Department of Sociology, Criminal Justice, and Women’s Studies.
He previously worked at Guilford Technical Community College as coordinator of recruitment and retention from 1983 to1984 and as assistant director of admissions at UNC-Greensboro from 1980 to 1982. Flynn earned a Ph.D. in family studies and a M.S. in child development and family relations from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. He earned a B.A. in psychology from Davidson College. He received the USC Upstate Annual Award for Scholarly and Creative Pursuits in 2002 and 2009. Flynn currently serves as a Fellow at the Oxford Centre for Animal Ethics, Oxford, England, a position he has held since 2008.
