Reading through blogs this week it was surprising to see how many posts referenced the connection between authenticity and success, both personally and professionally, but the nature of the relationship was only glossed over.

As we embrace the momentum of growth, development, and fresh starts it’s important to really understand why and how this relationship works if you want to capitalize on it.

Here’s a breakdown of what you need to know about personal authenticity and success:

1.    Authenticity is both internal and external.  It is important to understand that there are two separate facets to your truth that need your attention.  The first is your inner truth, and the second is your external truth.  Your inner truth deals with identifying and accepting yourself, faults and all, while your external truth focuses on how you express that truth to others.

2.    Truth is just one part of the equation.  The cornerstone of authenticity is truth, namely remaining true to yourself above all else, but self-actualization does not stop there.  Being true to yourself influences success because it establishes credibility.  When people feel you are genuine then they will believe you more readily.  Following your truth won’t take you very far unless it is also reliable.

3.    The reliability factor. Along with that credibility comes the responsibility of being reliable, and that means to not exaggerate and always deliver what you promise.  These two things will either strengthen the credibility you established by being authentic, or destroy it.

4.    Integrity is integral.  Integrity is defined as the honest interaction with others and ourselves.  This uncompromising adherence to a set of principles is our right, our choice and the foundation to our personal wellbeing and happiness as well as our success.

5.    Value is part of your truth.  Some of the most authentic and genuine people still fall short of success because they do not understand or know their worth.  Most of us undervalue ourselves, and that is a major hurtle to achieve success.  When you accept your true worth and the value you offer the more you can demand for it.

There is an undeniable connection between success and authenticity, but truth alone is not enough.  Without credibility, reliability and value following your truth won’t bring about success.
