Former South Carolina Legislator, Joan Brady, Awarded the Order of The Palmetto

COLUMBIA, SC – April 11, 2013 – Former Richland County State Representative, Ms. Joan Brady, was awarded the prestigious Order of the Palmetto in a special presentation today, at the South Carolina statehouse.

 

The Order of the Palmetto is  awarded by the governor and is the highest recognition given to a citizen for their service to the state.

Representatives Nathan Ballentine (Richland), Shannon Erickson (Beaufort), and Deborah Long (Lancaster), on behalf of Governor Nikki Haley joined other statewide legislators to welcome Ms. Brady back to House Chambers for the presentation.

Ms. Brady served is the SC House of Representatives for four terms beginning in 2005.  During that time, she held numerous leadership positions including; House Insurance Committee Chair, Joint Committee on Children Vice Chair and House Majority Deputy WHIP.

Prior to serving in the SC House, Ms. Brady served four years on Richland County Council, and for two of those years she served as Vice Chair. In addition, she also served for four years as the Mayor of the Town of Arcadia Lakes.

She has also held various positions on national and state boards.  Most recently, Ms. Brady served as the  Executive Board Secretary for the national organization – Women In Government.

I gladly dedicated my time in public office to the needs of the families and children of our state, said Ms. Brady.  I take great satisfaction in knowing that my work helped make our families stronger, our communities greener, and our businesses more prosperous.

Some of the noteworthy legislation that Ms. Brady sponsored while serving in the SC House includes the following:

·         The Responsible Father’s Registry , expediting the state’s adoption process

·         The Sex Offender Residency Restriction Act, limiting residency locations for convicted sex offenders

·         The Energy & Efficiency Act, establishing green building regulations for state structures.

Ms. Brady was also recognized on Wednesday,  by the SC General Assembly Women’s Legislative Caucus at their annual Jean Laney Harris luncheon. She was awarded the Cathy Harvin Memorial Scholarship, which is given in memory of former state legislator and a former colleague of Ms. Brady, Cathy Harvin of Summerton, S.C.
