Free classes equip family caregivers with self-care tools

July 9, 2015

SUMMERVILLE, SC – The ARK, Alzheimer’s Family Support Services, is offering a free educational series specifically designed for caregivers. The “Powerful Tools for Caregivers” course provides caregivers with the tools they need to also take care of themselves.

This program helps family caregivers reduce stress, improve self-confidence, communicate feelings better, balance their lives, increase their ability to make tough decisions, and locate helpful resources.

Upcoming classes are:

  • 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Thursdays from Aug. 20 through Sept. 24 at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, 510 St. James Ave. in Goose Creek.
  • 5:30-8 p.m. Thursdays from Aug. 20 through Sept. 24 at Martin Luther Evangelical Lutheran Church, 1605 Harbor View Road in Charleston.

“Powerful Tools for Caregivers” consists of six weekly sessions. Two experienced and certified class leaders conduct the series, which includes interactive lessons, discussions and brainstorming sessions. Participants will take the tools they choose and put them into action for life.

Participants will receive a copy of “The Caregiver Helpbook.” Classes are free as part of a grant from Wheat Ridge Ministries. A $30 donation is appreciated to cover the cost of the book, but is not required to participate.

To register call 843-832-2357 or go to www.TheAKofSC.org (under the Caregiver menu). Registration deadline is Aug. 13. A minimum of six participants is needed to hold the class, but class size is limited to 12.
