Free First Thursday to feature exhibition opening and soulful coloring party

Meet the artists of 22 South Carolinians and Sip & Scribble with FAAAC
On opening day of Guignard Gallery exhibition 22 South Carolinians, a companion show to the major exhibition 30 Americans, visitors to the Columbia Museum of Art are invited to view new art, meet artists, and create art themselves while enjoying free admission during Free First Thursday at the CMA on Thursday, December 2. The evening features a meet-and-greet with the artists of 22 South Carolinians as well as the sixth edition of the popular Sip & Scribble, an artful and soulful coloring book party from CMA affinity group the Friends of African American Art & Culture (FAAAC).

Many artists call South Carolina home, carrying with them connections to a place that has had an indelible influence on their creative practices. Taking inspiration from the featured fall exhibition 30 Americans, 22 South Carolinians highlights remarkable contemporary Black artists who have been shaped by their experiences in South Carolina, revealing unique portraits of creativity, culture, and visual storytelling. From the abstract to the Afrofuturist, from the formally trained to the self-taught, these artists explore past, present, and future states of Blackness that are universally expressed and geographically connected.
On view December 2, 2021, through May 22, 2022, 22 South Carolinians features the work of Cameron Alexander, Tarleton Blackwell, Jai-Anna Carter, Ija Charles, Robert Coffey, Angela Corbett, Michael Dantzler, B. Dukes, Raishad Glover, Malik Greene, Sanford Greene, Tonya Gregg, Roni Henderson-Day, Terry K. Hunter, Dogon Krigga, Ernest “Chicken Man” Lee, J. Renee, Ce Scott-Fitts, Isaac Udogwu, Cedric Umoja, Sabrina White, and Thomas the Younger. Meet the artists during the exhibition’s opening celebration from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m.
From 5:00 to 8:00 p.m., join the FAAAC for Sip & Scribble, an artful and soulful coloring book party. Relax with friends, enjoy one free glass of wine, and color pages illustrated by world-renowned South Carolina artist William H. Johnson (1901–1970). Cash bar. No registration required.
