From Tragedy to Action: Community Rallies for Injured American Legion Riders

The Laurens County community continues to come together in support of two American Legion Post 25 members, Jim Peterson and Jim Massey, following the recent motorcycle accident that left both men with serious injuries.

Recovery Updates

According to an update shared by fellow Post member Kevin Farnsworth, both men remain on a long road to recovery, with steady progress and ongoing needs.

Peterson is currently undergoing physical therapy multiple times a day and continues to make progress. While his recovery will take time, those close to him are encouraged by the improvements he is showing.

Massey, who sustained significant spinal injuries, has been moved to a specialized rehabilitation facility. He remains heavily medicated and, at this time, has no movement from the chest down. His condition underscores the extent of care and long-term support that will be needed in the months ahead.

“This is what we do—we take care of our own,” said Kevin Farnsworth. “We’re going to keep showing up for Jim and Jim and make sure they have what they need to get through this.”

Community Support & Upcoming Efforts

Volunteers are already mobilizing for hands-on support. This Saturday, members of the American Legion and community volunteers will begin construction of a handicap-accessible ramp at Peterson’s home. Plans are also underway to assist with extensive renovations at Massey’s home to accommodate his ongoing medical needs.

A community fundraiser is scheduled for April 18 at the American Legion Post, with 100 percent of proceeds going directly toward home modifications for Peterson and major renovations for Massey.
