October 13, 2010

GREENVILLE, SC – October 13, 2010 – Furman University education professor Paul Thomas has published two new books—the first about parental choice in education, and the second about comics and graphic novels.

Parental Choice? A Critical Reconsideration of Choice and the Debate about Choice unmasks calls for parental and school choice with a critical view of both the traditional bureaucratic public school system and the body of research surrounding school choice and private schooling.

Challenging Genres: Comics and Graphic Novels offers educators, students, parents, and comic book readers a comprehensive exploration of comics and graphic novels as a challenging genre/medium.

Before joining the Furman faculty in 2002, Thomas taught for 18 years in South Carolina’s public schools.  He earned undergraduate, master’s and doctoral degrees in education from the University of South Carolina, and has focused throughout his career on writing and the teaching of writing.  His scholarship and teaching deal primarily with critical literacy and social justice.
