Furman Ranked among Best College Values by Kiplinger’s Magazine

November 4, 2010

GREENVILLE, SC – November 4, 2010 – For the second consecutive year, Furman University has moved up in the rankings of Kiplinger’s “100 Best Values in Private Liberal Arts Colleges.”Furman was No. 38 in the latest edition of the rankings, which appear in the December 2010 issue of Kiplinger’s Personal Finance magazine.  The publication will be on newsstands Nov. 11.

Furman was ranked 39th nationally last year and 45th the year before that.

Kiplinger lists the top 200 private colleges and universities that “deliver a high-quality education at an affordable price.”  The magazine rankings include the top 100 best values in “Private Colleges” and the top 100 among “Liberal Arts Colleges.”

“We have been judicious with our resources without diminishing the outstanding educational experience we offer,” said Bill Berg, vice president for enrollment.  “It’s gratifying that Furman is being recognized for its efforts on behalf of our students and families.”According to Kiplinger, its rankings measure both academic quality and affordability, with quality accounting for two-thirds of the total.   The magazine started with data on more than 600 private institutions and then sorted the schools based on quality measures like admission rate, the test scores of incoming freshmen, and four- and five-year graduation rates.  It then added cost data—including tuition, fees, room and board and financial aid—and re-ranked the institutions according to the combination of quality and affordability.
