Gallery at City Hall presents What is Art?
October 22, 2019Five local artists try to define, what is art? The Gallery at City Hall’s latest feature exhibition delves into how we interpret art. Curated by artists Jeremy Butler and Keith Tolen, the exhibition What is Art?, sets out to challenge the viewing audience and stimulate the way in which we, as art viewers, see, look, and interpret art created in the Midlands region. Butler and Tolen seek to elevate the discussion on the merits of craft, the perception of the human anatomy within art and to explore the complex process in deciding which art is displayed or not displayed; all the while searching for common ground between the artist, the exhibitor, and the viewer.
The exhibition features works from Jeremy Butler and Keith Tolen, each known for their award- wining work. Butler, who received top awards in the 3D category at the State Fair, showcases his latest sculptured pieces in the show, allowing viewers to actively engage with his art. Tolen’s latest piece in the exhibition, explores the pointillist effect through color and design and a variety of mark making techniques. There are several other artists featured in the exhibition, gallery visitors will have a chance to see artist Ty Davis’ emotive nonobjective artworks featuring fluid motion, the stylized art of artist Rodgers Boykin, and a signature piece by artist Sean Sims entitled Dog West, which made an appearance at the State Fair.
What is Art? is now on view through December 31, 2019. Opening reception for the new exhibition will be November 7, 2019 at 5:00 p.m. in the Gallery at City Hall.
Alongside this featured exhibition, the SC Heart Gallery Foundation presents a photographic series featuring South Carolina’s waiting children looking for loving homes. The foundation partners with DSS Adoptions to increase the number of adoptive families for children seeking forever homes. Their professional, framed photographs have been on display throughout the state in libraries, churches, coffee shops, hospitals, malls, and other high traffic areas where families are present. The goal of the SC Heart Gallery exhibition is to help children in foster care find their forever families.
