Game Day Glamour – Showing Your Support In Style

With Labor Day around the corner and school is back in session that only means one thing… football season is here.  And in a college town that dominates the city and every social calendar during the fall.

More likely than not over the next few months you will be invited to attend a game, tailgate, house party or other event centered around football and dressing appropriately is expected.  If you are not a fan of logos or a graduate of USC like me here are two outfits that can be pulled together for any wardrobe that show team spirit and save you investing in paraphernalia you will likely were a handful to times:

1.    Team colors.  It doesn’t matter if you are an avid fan or peripheral supporter, the easiest way to show your team spirit is to don the colors.  Like holiday color combinations team colors are so readily identifiable, especially in context of the season simply wearing them is all it takes to become a supporter.

An added bonus is that black is a neutral that will go with any other color, so you can wear the item any day of the week, not just on game days.  Garnet is a harder color for everyone to pull off.

2.    Color blocking.  A hot trend that is quickly becoming a style staple, color blocking also works great for team support.  Solid blocks of color are easily seen and recognized in a crowd, which is exactly want you want if you are cheering on your team from the stands.

This is also a great way to incorporate garnet into your wardrobe if it is not your best color.  Wearing a garnet skirt or pair of pants you stay within the theme of the occasion and keep an unflattering color away from your face.

3.    Accessories.  Walk into any store this fall and you are going to see pins, rings, bags, bows, necklaces and just about anything else you can image sporting a team logo.  Just because they make it does not mean you should buy it and just because you receive it as a gift does not mean you should wear it.  There are far better ways to use accessories to show team support.

None of the accessories used here scream ‘USC’ on their own, but when paired with the outfits and put in context of the weekend they work to project that sentiment.  I am not a fan of specialized items and pieces unless they are necessary, and even then try to keep the number limited.  Owning a few logo items is fine, just don’t wear them all together.  One is the most you should try to pull off at a time.

Just because life around town will soon revolve around college football does not mean your wardrobe should.  One or two key pieces are all you need to fit in and show your support whether it is or watching the game from your company’s private box.
