General Thomas Sumter to Be Topic of Revolutionary War Lecture Series at Laurens County Museum
January 1, 2025The next event in the Laurens County Museum Revolutionary War Lecture Series will feature historian and battlefield preservationist Durant Ashmore on Tuesday, January 21, at 7:00 p.m. Ashmore will delve into the life, legacy, and military achievements of South Carolina General Thomas Sumter. Known as the “Gamecock,” Sumter played a pivotal role in the Southern campaign of the Revolutionary War, leading efforts that significantly contributed to the Patriot victory.
Ashmore’s lecture will focus on the critical battles fought in South Carolina that turned the tide in favor of American independence. The event will take place at the Laurens County Museum, located at 116 South Public Square in Laurens, SC, and is open to the public. Museum members and youth may attend for free, while non-members are encouraged to make a suggested donation of $5 to support the museum’s programming.
The Laurens County Museum invites the community to explore its exhibit hall, which is free to visit and open Tuesday through Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. The museum operates as a non-profit membership association and welcomes volunteers to help preserve and share the region’s rich history.
