Georgetown City Council: January 2026 Meeting Highlights

January 18, 2026

Mayor Jay Doyle convened the first council meeting of the year on January 15, welcoming nearly 100 attendees. Jessie M. Walker was elected Mayor Pro Tem for a two-year term, ensuring continuity in leadership when the mayor is unavailable.

A 180-day moratorium on rezoning was narrowly approved (4-3), allowing time for a comprehensive review of city planning documents and the hiring of additional staff. The ordinance will be revisited next month.

Public comments ranged from congratulations for new members to spirited debate over zoning, annexation concerns, and calls for greater transparency.

Georgetown was honored with its 35th consecutive Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting. The council also approved the purchase of a new bucket truck for the utilities department, utility relocations for the Black River Road project, insurance payments, and renewal of a law enforcement aid agreement. The city’s electrical utilities GIS mapping project is nearing completion.

Staff were tasked with drafting ordinances to adjust the public comment agenda, establish a Youth Advocacy Council, and formally recognize a local non-profit each month as a community resource.

The meeting concluded with an executive session; no formal actions were taken afterward.
