Georgetown County recognizes Severe Weather and Flood Safety Week March 8-14

March 9, 2026

Georgetown County Emergency Management will join the S.C. Emergency Management Division, the National Weather Service and the S.C. Department of Natural Resources in observing Severe Weather and Flood Safety Week, March 8-14, as designated by Gov. Henry McMaster.

Each day of the week focuses on a different preparedness topic, from understanding severe weather hazards and reading watches and warnings, to tornado safety, flood risks and storm recovery.

A highlight of the week is the annual statewide tornado drill, set for Wednesday, March 11, at 9 a.m. The National Weather Service will activate tone alerts on NOAA Weather Radios during the drill. Georgetown County Emergency Services encourages schools, businesses and community organizations to participate.

“A lot of people think about flooding when they hear a hurricane is coming, and that’s understandable — but in Georgetown County, rising water is a constant threat,” said Brandon Ellis, Georgetown County Emergency Services Director. “We have five rivers and a coastline that demand respect year-round. This week is a good reminder to know your risk, have a plan and never assume you’re in the clear.”

Residents can find preparedness resources at S.C. Emergency Management Division website. The free SC Emergency Manager App, available on the App Store and Google Play, is another tool for planning and preparing for emergencies.
