“#GetYourGiveOn with The Soul of Philanthropy” free event for all ages – April 29

A free event for all ages, “#GetYourGiveOn with The Soul of Philanthropy” will be held on April 29, 2018 from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. at Richland Library Main. Kids, teens and adults can celebrate their inner philanthropists at the last public event of “The Soul of Philanthropy” exhibit. Registration is free at https://tsopcola.org/events.

A partnership between Central Carolina Community Foundation, Richland Library and Women Engaged, “The Soul of Philanthropy” is a free, multimedia exhibition dedicated to sharing the tradition of African-American philanthropy, closing May 6. The exhibit presents the long and unsung legacy of black philanthropy, from generous donors of wealth to every day givers carving a way out of no way.

Guests can register to enjoy the following “#GetYourGiveOn with The Soul of Philanthropy” activities on April 29 from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m.:

For Children: Giving Stories + Crafts—a special storytime for families and a craft project to create your own giving jar. Take home your creation and use it to collect your family’s charitable donations. When it is full, decide together where the money will go. Special guest appearances by Olivia the Octopus and Gordon, the Purple Jamaican Yam from Auntie Karen Foundation. Storytime starts at 3pm in the Children’s Room, Crafts are drop-in from 3-6 p.m.

For Teens: I Am A Philanthropist for Teens—Join with friends from EveryBlackGirl, Inc. to create your personal philanthropy message on a T-shirt or button and share your passion about where and how you plan to #GetYourGiveOn. Teen Drop-in activity is from 3-6 p.m. in the Teen Center.

For Young Professionals: Embracing the Diversity of Philanthropy—Ebonie Johnson Cooper, Principal Consultant of Friends of Ebonie, LLC and Executive Director and Founder of the Young Black and Giving Back Institute in Washington D.C. will offer a keynote presentation about embracing philanthropy as an act of love and also moderate a panel of local next-gen leaders with emcee, Kara Simmons, President, The Talented Tenth. Panelists are Zakiya Esper, Founder and Executive Director of Sowing Seeds into the Midlands; Sam Johnson, Nexsen Pruet; and, Vladimir “DJ Loui Vee” Scott, Assistant Program Director, DJ, radio personality and music director at 100.1 The Beat. Includes a special performance by Columbia’s very own EBG and the NAACP ACT-SO program. Speaker and Panel start are at 4 p.m. in the Auditorium.

“#GetYourGiveOn with The Soul of Philanthropy” is generously sponsored by Colonial Life and is free for the public. “The Soul of Philanthropy” exhibit is made possible through generous support from Central Carolina Community Foundation, The Knight Foundation, Richland Library and Women Engaged.

The goal of “Giving Back: The Soul of Philanthropy” is to showcase the rich heritage of black giving on all levels; raise awareness of philanthropy in all communities and inspire others to join the conversation about philanthropy; and celebrate stories of local South Carolina philanthropists.

The exhibit runs at Richland Library Main through May 6, 2018. Richland Library is located at 1431 Assembly Street, Columbia, SC 29201. Admission is free during the library’s regular visiting hours.
