GHS oncologist receives lifetime achievement award

November 13, 2014

GREENVILLE, SC – W. Larry Gluck, MD, medical director of the Cancer Institute of Greenville Health System, received the Dr. Charles Townes Individual Lifetime Achievement Award from InnoVision during their annual awards dinner on November 11. Named after Greenville native Dr. Charles Townes, this prestigious award is presented annually to an individual who exhibits a commitment to the advancement of technology and the betterment of the South Carolina community.

Dr. Gluck was nominated for his ongoing efforts to find and develop innovative ways to improve all aspects of cancer care delivery. Some examples include the Institute for Translational Oncology Research (ITOR), an international destination center that develops and delivers innovative, personalized cancer therapies; Rare Tumor Center, the nation’s first center dedicated exclusively to the treatment and research of rare tumors; and the Center for Integrative Oncology and Survivorship, a patient-centered program that integrates evidence-based complementary therapies with traditional cancer care to treat the whole patient – mind, body and spirit.

Another example is the GHS Cancer Institute’s recent award of $6.7 million from the National Cancer Institute’s Community Oncology Research Program (NCORP) to conduct clinical trials and research studies aimed at improving patient outcomes and reducing health disparities. The GHS Cancer Institute is the only community-based site in South Carolina to receive this award.

“The innovative programs and research taking place at the GHS Cancer Institute are a testament to Dr. Gluck’s vision and leadership and his team’s commitment to positively impacting the lives of cancer patients both locally and beyond,” said Peter Dunphy, a Michelin North America employee who nominated Dr. Gluck for the award. “Dr. Gluck and his team have positively impacted the lives of countless cancer patients and their families across South Carolina and why he is deserving of this award.”

“I am humbled to receive this recognition because it’s carried on the shoulders of many skilled and dedicated individuals from the GHS Cancer Institute,” said Dr. Gluck. “This award reflects the culture of curiosity and innovation at GHS that is defining one of the nation’s newest academic health centers.”
