GHS physician named to national graduate medical education board

GREENVILLE, SC – David Forstein, DO, a reproductive endocrinologist with Greenville Health System’s Fertility Center of the Carolinas and associate professor of obstetrics and gynecology at the University of South Carolina School of Medicine Greenville, has been appointed to serve on the Board of Directors for the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME).
Dr. Forstein is one of the first doctors of osteopathic medicine in the nation to be appointed to the ACGME board.
The ACGME is a private, nonprofit organization that accredits about 9,300 residency programs in 133 specialties and subspecialties that educate about 117,000 residents. Its mission is to improve the quality of health care in the United States by assessing and advancing the quality of resident physicians’ education.
In February 2014, the ACGME, American Osteopathic Association and the American Association of Colleges of Osteopathic Medicine agreed to a single accreditation system for graduate medical education programs in the U.S. The single accreditation system will allow graduates of allopathic and osteopathic medical schools to complete their residency and/or fellowship education in ACGME-accredited programs and demonstrate achievement of common milestones and competencies.
As part of the single accreditation system, the American Osteopathic Association and American Association of Colleges of Osteopathic Medicine will become ACGME member organizations and nominate members to the ACGME Board of Directors. Dr. Forstein was nominated by the American Osteopathic Association.
