Gov. Nikki Haley Announces 2014 Governor’s Award For Excellence In Science
May 1, 2014COLUMBIA, SC – Governor Nikki Haley was joined today by the South Carolina Academy of Science in presenting the 2014 Governor’s Award for Excellence in Science.
Founded in 1924, the South Carolina Academy of Science’s mission is to promote the creation and dissemination of scientific knowledge in South Carolina by stimulating research and publication. The South Carolina Governor’s Award for Excellence in Science was established in 1985 in order to promote wider awareness of scientific activity by honoring individuals whose achievements and contributions to science deserve special recognition.
“Each one of the scientists we honored today has contributed to South Carolina’s success in enormous ways – whether it’s teaching our students, training our workforce or producing award-winning research – and they are tremendous assets to our state,” said Gov. Nikki Haley.
2014 Governor’s Award for Excellence in Science Recipients include the following:
- Dr. John Ballato, VP for Economic Development at Clemson, School of Materials Science and Engineering at Clemson University, is awarded the 2014 Governor’s Award for Excellence in Scientific Research.
- Dr. Russell Pate, Department of Exercise Science, at the Arnold School of Public Health-University of South Carolina is awarded both the 2014 Governor’s Award for Excellence in Scientific Research and the 2014 Governor’s Award for Excellence in Scientific Awareness.
- Dr. Brian Powell, the Department of Environmental Engineering and Earth Science at Clemson University is awarded the 2014 Governor’s Young Scientist Award for Excellence in Scientific Research.
- Dr. Apparo Rao, Department of Physics and Astronomy at Clemson University is awarded the 2014 Governor’s Award for Excellence in Scientific Research.
