Governor appoints Rob Tyson to insurance law study committee
October 7, 2024Gov. Henry McMaster has appointed Rob Tyson, a member of Robinson Gray law firm, to a new study committee set up to conduct a thorough review of South Carolina’s insurance laws.
The Insurance Review and Study Committee, created by a proviso in the recently passed state budget, is charged with addressing coverage availability, premium rates, and deductibles. The proviso requires that the panel consist of three senators, three representatives and three non-legislative members appointed by the governor.
Of the governor’s three, one must be a “practicing attorney with extensive insurance defense experience,” and that is the seat Rob Tyson has filled.
The legislation envisions that the panel will conclude its work by the end of January 2025, at which point the General Assembly will be back in session. The Legislature could extend that deadline if found necessary.
The scope of inquiry extends to insurance laws regarding residential property, businesses and “restaurant/tavern/bar… liquor liability.” That last category has been the subject of considerable discussion and concern, as a large number of restaurants and bars have recently closed, citing the cost of insurance.
Rob practices in the areas of business litigation, administrative and regulatory law, and election law. Rob has represented clients before the South Carolina Supreme Court and other levels of state and federal courts, and has appeared before many local and state government entities.
