Eagles advance to state championship for the first time since the school’s inception

COLUMBIA, SC – May 23, 2012 – The South Carolina Governor’s School for Science and Mathematics (GSSM) boys soccer team recently advanced to the Class 1A state championship game, becoming the first athletic team in GSSM history to play for the state title.

The team completed its season with a record of 15-5, the most successful soccer season since the school opened in 1988.  The Eagles were named Lower State Champions on Tuesday, May 15, playing against Blackville-Hilda. They competed against St. Joseph’s in the state championship on Saturday, May 19, at Memorial Stadium in Columbia.

The team showcased exceptional performance against these skilled opponents, ranking fourth in the state’s 1A division. It has been a wonderful season, said John Batten, GSSM soccer coach and director of student life.

As I watched the Eagles play in the state championship, I reflected on my first meeting with the team and how we were actually achieving our goal of playing in a state game. I could not be prouder of a group of young men.

The School expects to continue this success into the future, emphasizing that GSSM cultivates well-rounded students who possess both outstanding academic and athletic skills.GSSM offers a full range of fall, winter and spring sports to keep students active and healthy. Varsity and intramural sports are offered at the school. Athletic teams compete in the state’s 1A region and are open to all students with more than 80 percent participation.
