Governor’s Mansion lit blue as part of 2012 Light the Way Campaign

First Gentleman Michael Haley raises awareness of Down syndrome, cognitive research
 
COLUMBIA, SC – March 22, 2012 – First Gentleman Michael Haley lit theSouth Carolina Governor’s Mansion blue last night to raise awareness ofadvances being made to empower individuals with Down syndrome.  Thisinitiative, begun by First Lady Christie of New Jersey, highlightsnon-profit groups such as Research Down Syndrome, who have madegroundbreaking advancements towards the development of treatments toaddress the intellectual challenges associated with Down syndrome.  Thedate of March 21 is meaningful as Down syndrome results from thepresence of three copies of chromosome 21.  Down syndrome, which affectsover 400,000 people in the United States, is the most commonchromosomal disorder.
 
“We were honored to join first spouses across the country raising Downsyndrome awareness, encouraging everyone to support advances incognitive research and in lifting up those affected by Down syndrome,”said First Gentleman Haley.
