New Name Part of A Re-Branding and Revitalizing Effort for Arts District

GREENVILLE, SC – October 23, 2011 – The Pendleton Street Arts District located in West Greenville, SC has decided to re-brand itself as the Far West End.

In a move designed to increase awareness of the Arts District and its location for the residents of the Upstate, the Far West End Business Association has chosen a new name for the district. It will be known as the Far West End.

The Far West End is reached by traveling to the end of South Main Street, and veering right. The heart of the Far West End is the intersection of Pendleton and Lois Streets, about ½ mile west of Academy Street. The neighborhood was home to Shoeless Joe Jackson and was a mill village during Greenville’s textile heydey.

This is the first step in a large re-branding effort designed to help people find the Arts District easily, as well as attract merchants and investors to the area. Piggybacking off the popularity and success of “the historic West End” where businesses have already developed and solidified a significant brand, the Far West End was a logical choice.

“Our reason for developing the new Far West End name is that we want to communicate where we are easily and effortlessly to residents and tourists alike who visit Greenville. We want to increase awareness of the area, bump up foot traffic, and attract businesses, which will all help revitalize the area,“ says Ruta Fox, Association member and branding expert who helped shape the initiative.

Libby McMillan, Association member and co-chair of the re-branding committee adds, “the name works well because anyone who knows where the West End is, has an idea where the Far West End is.” According to Jim Gorman, President of the Association and a gallery owner in the district, “this idea is just the beginning of exciting revitalization developments planned for the neighborhood by the Association and the City of Greenville.”

The Far West End logo was designed by Association member/artist Adam Schrimmer and the tagline “Greenville’s Creative Edge” was created by Ruta Fox. Libby McMillan conceived the name.
