Riley, Howard, Case and Hoag assume leadership positions in county economic development organization

GREENVILLE COUNTY, SC – August 1, 2011 – The Greenville Area Development Corporation, charged with promoting and enhancing quality of life in Greenville County by facilitating job growth and investment, announced the appointment of four Upstate leaders as officers of the Board of Directors for 2011-2012.

Veteran Upstate banking executive Chris Riley was named as chairman for 2011-12, succeeding Jo Watson Hackl of The Wyche Firm in that position.  Riley is joined by Bob Howard as Vice Chair, Scott Case as Treasurer, and Susan Hoag as Secretary.

All four of these leaders are well immersed in the Greenville business community and have been active contributors to economic development activities here for years, said Jerry Howard, GADC President and CEO, in making the announcement.  Their acceptance of these important positions adds critical experience, stability and insight to the economic development efforts of this organization.

Mr. Riley is South Carolina market president for Regions Bank, which operates 36 offices in markets across the Upstate, Columbia, Beaufort, Hilton Head and Charleston.  A veteran banker, he previously established two private investment funds in the Carolinas before joining Regions.  He is active with the Metropolitan Arts Council and the Student Improvement Council for Hughes Academy, among other civic organizations.

Mr. Howard is President of the Greenville Tech Foundation and the former executive director of the Greenville Symphony Orchestra. A retired banker, he serves on the board of numerous civic organizations including the Community Foundation of Greenville, the Metropolitan Arts Council and the Rose Ball, and is a past president of the South Carolina Nature Conservancy, Leadership South Carolina and the South Carolina Student Loan Corporation.

Mr. Case is a Certified Public Accountant with more than 20 years of professional experience in the areas of tax and finance.  Having previously served on Greenville County Council, Mr. Case authored Greenville’s first Biennium budget, led the County to a Triple A credit rating, and was instrumentally involved in the creation of the GADC.  Currently, Mr. Case serves as the elected Auditor of Greenville County and, in addition to his community involvement, is a member of both the South Carolina and American Institute of CPAs and the Government Finance Officers Association.

Ms. Hoag is Community Development & Legislative Liaison for Greenville Technical College, and had a successful career in banking prior to joining the college. She has served as chairwoman of the South Carolina Commission on Women, chairwoman of the Greenville Chamber’s Legislative Committee, chairwoman of Freedom Weekend Aloft, and numerous other community projects. Past recognitions include the Athena Award for Leadership, Order of the Jessamine and the Order of the Palmetto.

CEO Howard expressed appreciation to Ms. Hackl for her service on the Board and to the community. Ms. Hackl has played a significant role in helping move forward Greenville’s economic development mission, and for that we are immensely grateful, he said.

Since its inception in 2001, the Greenville Area Development Corporation has announced support of more than 200 major projects representing more than $2.3 billion in capital investment and creating in excess of 12,000 new jobs in Greenville County.  Greenville County revenues from fee-in-lieu-of-tax (FILOT) agreements generated by GADC-assisted companies continue to grow, producing a 7:1 return on investment for public dollars invested in the organization since the GADC’s inception.  Private sector support of the GADC has also reached an all-time high, with more than 140 investor companies now contributing to the community’s success.
