Park Plan Includes Two Additional Pedestrian Bridges, Full River Restoration

Greenville City Council gave initial approval to a $38 million budget proposal to construct Unity Park. The 60-acre park on Greenville’s West Side, funded primarily by tourism dollars, is expected to open in November 2021. Preliminary site work is already underway.

Budget Highlights:

  • More than $6 million shaved off initial request; reduced from $44 million to $38 million
  • Added $1.8 million to complete restoration of the full half-mile segment of the Reedy River in Unity Park
  • Added two pedestrian bridges along the Reedy to increase access across the river
  • Construction of a much-needed Parks & Rec maintenance facility near Unity Park

Construction plans:

  • Preservation and renovation of Mayberry Field, the historic park built by the City in the 1920s for African-American children during a time of segregation.
  • Michelin Green, an expansive 9-acre green space that serves as Unity Park’s front door
  • Three playgrounds, including the 3,600-square-foot Greenville Water Splash ground
  • Visitors Center featuring a welcome center and assembly space
  • Auro Bridge, a custom-designed pedestrian bridge spanning the Reedy River in the center of the park
  • Meadowbrook Green, named for the historic Meadowbrook Park built on this site in 1938
  • An extension of the Swamp Rabbit Trail and a network of walking paths
