Greenville Honors Minor Shaw as Economic Development Ambassador for 2010

January 26, 2011

GREENVILLE COUNTY, SC – January 26, 2011 – The Greenville Area Development Corporation, charged with promoting and enhancing quality of life in Greenville County by facilitating job growth and investment, has named Minor Mickel Shaw, president of MICCO Corporation and recently named Chair of the Greenville-Spartanburg Airport Commission, as Greenville County’s Economic Development Ambassador for 2010.

The formal announcement was made at the State House in Columbia on January 25 during ceremonies as South Carolina celebrated Industry Appreciation Week.  Governor Nikki Haley individually recognized Ms. Shaw and 45 other Ambassadors, one from each county in the state, who have made exceptional contributions to community and state economic development in the past year.   Industry Appreciation Week is celebrated to express thanks to companies for their contributions to local communities, to honor economic development leaders, and to build awareness that existing business is a fundamental driver of both local and state economies.

GADC President & CEO Jerry Howard commended Ms. Shaw’s tireless efforts and total commitment to the successful recruitment of Southwest Airlines to the Greenville-Spartanburg Airport, noting that she had spent countless hours meeting and traveling in pursuit of the carrier to help land what is seen as game-changing for the region in terms of economic development competitiveness.

Ms. Shaw’s leadership brought together the Greenville Area Development Corporation team, the City of Greenville, the Greenville chamber, Upstate Alliance, our legislative delegation and many others which resulted in bringing Southwest service to the Upstate, said Howard.  In addition, she has made major, positive contributions to this county’s economic prosperity and quality of life by serving on numerous boards for the benefit of citizens of Greenville County, and certainly deserves this recognition and honor.

The current President of Micco Corporation and Mickel Investment Group, Ms. Shaw has been honored with myriad local and statewide awards, including the State of South Carolina’s Order of the Palmetto Award, the Greenville Chamber of Commerce Chairman’s Award, the Urban League’s Whitney Young Humanitarian Award, and Philanthropist of the Year.

Recently named Chairperson of the Greenville-Spartanburg Airport Commission with the passing of former chair Roger Milliken, she is a Trustee of both The Duke Endowment and the Hollingsworth Funds.  She is former Volunteer of the Year for the YMCA of Greenville, Citizen of the Year of the Greenville Chapter of the Institute of Management Accountants, a Woman of Distinction of the Greenville area Girl Scout Council, and a distinguished alumna of Leadership Greenville.

Ms. Shaw attended Randolph-Macon Woman’s College and earned her Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of North Carolina – Chapel Hill.

With dedicated leaders like Minor Shaw, coupled with the efforts of all of the organizations who help to advance economic development in this community, the Greenville Area Development Corporation’s ability to help produce jobs and capital investment for the people of Greenville County looks very bright, said Howard.  We all owe Minor a debt of gratitude for her many contributions.
