Greenville Little Theatre receives Arts in Education grant from S.C. Arts Commission
October 3, 2016
The Greenville Little Theatre (GLT) has been awarded a $7,000 Arts in Education grant by the South Carolina Arts Commission for the 2017 fiscal year. This support will allow GLT to tour its production ofAlexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day to Greenville County Title One elementary schools completely free of charge.
GLT on Tour, the theatre’s educational outreach program, has shared the magic of live theatre with over 140,000 children since its origination in 2000. The theatre tours a 45-minute production, performed by GLT’s Resident Acting Company and including sets, props, and costumes, to elementary schools throughout South Carolina, North Carolina, and Georgia.
“Greenville Little Theatre on Tour hopes to perform at all 16 Greenville County Title One Elementary Schools completely free-of-charge during the 2016-2017 school year, and this grant from the SCAC is vital in making that a reality,” said GLT Development Director Chelsea Street. “This funding, in addition to generous support from other community partners, will allow us to reach more Title One students than ever before in tour history, many who will experience live performance for the first time.”
Several additional organizations and individuals are partnering with the Greenville Little Theatre to meet its obligation of matching the Arts Commission grant with local dollars. Those who are supporting the grant project are: BMW, First Steps Read Greenville, the Metropolitan Arts Council, Publix Super Markets Charities, SunTrust Foundation, and generous support from individual theatre patrons.
While this grant will support performances that occur at Greenville County Title One elementary schools throughout the school year, local residents can see how the Arts Commission grant and local funds are benefiting the Greenville Little Theatre by attending a performance of Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day at the theatre, located at 444 College Street, Greenville, SC 29601, on March 16-18, 2017.
