The Greenville Symphony Orchestra announced there will be a free live outdoor broadcast of its highly anticipated opening weekend concert on Sunday, October 6 at the TD Stage at the Peace Center. This special event comes as a symbol of resilience and community spirit in the aftermath of Hurricane Helene.
The concert will feature Beethoven’s majestic Symphony No. 9 with guest choirs Bob Jones University Chorale, Furman Singers, North Greenville University Concert Choir and soloists Amanda Sheriff, Sara Crigger, Randall Umstead and Adrian Smith under the baton of Music Director Lee Mills. The decision to offer a free livestream broadcast aims to bring the uplifting power of music to everyone in the community, especially those affected by the recent hurricane, underscoring the Ninth Symphony’s statement of hope, joy, and unity.
“Greenville and our surrounding communities have been through an enormous ordeal over the last week,” said Jessica Satava, Executive Director of the Greenville Symphony Orchestra. “At the Greenville Symphony, we’ve been so inspired by our friends and neighbors coming together and helping each other in a time of need. We hope this free concert offers a way for our community to take a moment of respite amid the chaos and experience the healing and uniting power of music. Bring a lawn chair or blanket and join us.”
“Music has a unique ability to transcend difficult times,” Music Director Lee Mills added. “This is especially symbolic in Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony, which we’ll be performing this weekend – it captures the power of collective human spirit and, to me, is remarkably representative of what our community is going through. We’re excited to bring this performance to a larger audience and hope it brings joy to everyone.”
The free outdoor broadcast will begin at 3:00 p.m. Sunday, featuring a live feed from the concert inside the Peace Center to an LED screen on the TD Stage. Attendees should bring chairs and blankets to TD Stage amphitheater area at the Peace Center and space will be first come, first served. No registration is necessary. The GSO encourages everyone join in to experience the uplifting power of orchestral music.
