Greenville Technical College and Prisma Health join forces to train new EMS workers
July 7, 2025Greenville Technical College (GTC) and Prisma Health will collaborate to attract and prepare new Emergency Medical Technician workers.
According to the South Carolina Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Association, the state’s EMS agencies are facing a workforce crisis. As EMS professionals leave the field due to burnout, pursuit of other career opportunities, and retirement, there aren’t enough new trained personnel to take their places. The college will actively recruit and onboard the students to the program in their Continuing Education division, and Prisma Health will offer an Emergency Medical Technician course on its Greenville campus in both the fall and spring semesters. Students will be eligible for SC grants and scholarships through GTC that should reduce cost barriers to their career path.
Pursuing a career as an emergency medical technician offers unmatched hands-on medical experience, the chance to serve people from all walks of life, and the opportunity to build skills in adaptability, calm under pressure, and compassionate care. It’s a rewarding and impactful path that develops technical, medical and leadership skills.
The Emergency Medical Technician course focuses on the role and competencies of the prehospital care provider and exposes the student to the many psychological, social, behavioral, economic and environmental factors in the health of individuals and populations. Students will experience hands-on training in real-world scenarios such as stabilizing patients in the field for transport to the hospital.
The course prepares students to take the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT) examination to become certified as a South Carolina EMT.
Prisma Health is the number one employer of Greenville Technical College graduates. The state’s leading health care provider has partnered with the college for decades to create well-qualified professionals to enter the healthcare field and provide the highest quality patient care once they complete programs in nursing and the allied health fields.
Greenville Technical College also partners with Greenville County to offer EMT education. Students can learn more about this training option by going to https://ce.gvltec.edu/training/health-care/EMT.html
