Greenville Technical College awarded silver level in S.C. Military Academic Recognition Program
July 24, 2025Greenville Technical College (GTC) was recently awarded silver level status by the S.C. Military Academic Recognition Program, part of the S.C. Department of Veterans’ Affairs. The program highlights the state’s technical colleges, colleges, and universities that support service members, veterans, Reserve, National Guard members, and military families in achieving academic and professional goals.
“We are honored to recognize Greenville Technical College as a military-friendly institution. The faculty and staff are committed to the success of all military-affiliated students, and today’s award recognizes those efforts,” said Dan Wrightsman, deputy director of workforce enhancement with the S.C. Department of Veterans’ Affairs.
At GTC, Student Veterans Centers on three campuses provide inviting space for gathering, studying, and connecting. Lockheed Martin provided funding to furnish the centers and create this networking space for veteran students. A Veterans Financial Assistance office assists with enrollment and financial benefits. A Student Veterans Organization offers community and support.
“This is important recognition,” said Dr. Larry Miller, president of Greenville Technical College. “Over the past year and a half, we have made a concerted effort to step up our support for veterans and their families. It’s the least we can do for those who have served.”
Recent advancements in veteran services and resources have led to an increase in veterans who choose to use their benefits at GTC. Since the 2022-23 academic year with 392 students certified for benefits, the number has increased to over 600, with hopes to increase further in the years ahead.
“The award is important as it shines a brighter light on veteran resources at Greenville Technical College,” said Destinee Criego, a U.S. Army veteran and Diagnostic Medical Sonography student who serves as president of the newly formed Student Veteran Organization. “I’m excited about the organization as a place where questions can be answered, resources can be available, and veterans can connect.”
In addition to the S.C. Military Academic Recognition Program award, Greenville Technical College has also been accepted to participate in the U.S. Veterans Administration’s Yellow Ribbon Program. The program allows GTC and the VA to provide matching funds that cover all or a portion of the outstanding charges not covered under the Post-9/11 GI Bill.
