Greenville Zoo Host First Annual Enrichment Day
March 30, 2010Event designed to challenge and entice zoo animals
GREENVILLE, SC – March 31, 2010 – The Greenville Zoo will challenge the intelligence of its animals and entice them with a fun, interactive environment during the zoo’s first annual Enrichment Day on Saturday, April 3 from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
As part of the zoo’s Enrichment Day, Zoo guests will receive an inside glimpse at how zoo staff use enrichment to create a challenging environment to address an animal’s social, psychological and physical needs. The use of enrichment also helps enhance animal activity, provide mental stimulation and even improve the success of captive breeding of endangered species.
Zookeepers and educational docents will be on hand throughout the day, interacting with zoo guests and explaining the process of enrichment. Special activities and zookeeper talks will be focused on several of the animals throughout the day. The focus areas scheduled for enrichment day include:
10:00 a.m. – Primate Row
10:30 a.m. – Elephants
11:00 a.m. – Orangutans
11:30 a.m. – Ocelot
12:00 p.m. – Vietnamese pot-bellied pig
1:00 p.m. – Lions
1:30 p.m. – Siamangs
2:00 p.m. – Tamarins
2:30 p.m. – Elephants
About Greenville Zoo
Rated one of the best tourist attractions in South Carolina, the Greenville Zoo is an exotic animal kingdom located in downtown Greenville. Operated by the City of Greenville, the 14-acre facility features wildlife from around the world including giraffes, monkeys, giant tortoises and elephants. The Greenville Zoo is open seven days a week, except on Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s Day. The zoo’s hours of operation are from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and the gates close at 5 p.m.
