GSP announces roadway work, enhanced parking options

January 22, 2020

The Greenville-Spartanburg Airport Commission has approved plans to provide additional parking capacity for travelers at Greenville-Spartanburg International Airport (GSP.) The multi-phase construction project will begin in late January 2020 and will include construction of an additional surface parking lot, a new parking garage and expanded employee parking.

“Nearly 2.6 million passengers travel through the airport each year,” said GSP’s President and CEO Dave Edwards. “To accommodate expected growth in the years to come, we will need to bring additional vehicle parking online. We anticipate that these new projects will meet our current need and allow us to continue to grow in the future.”

To accommodate these construction projects, some airport roadway enhancements will be required. Among the changes will be the renovation of the airport’s entrance road Aviation Parkway. Improvements will include resurfacing of all lanes and the construction of a roundabout traffic circle.

Roadway work will commence on January 27, 2020. Lane closures on Aviation Parkway from I-85 to GSP Drive are expected during construction. At least one lane of traffic in each direction will be maintained throughout the project. Travelers are encouraged to plan additional travel time and closely monitor directional signage.

In November 2019, the airport began construction of 1,500 additional surface parking spaces for the new Economy Parking Lot C which will be located adjacent to the existing Economy Parking Lot B. When this project is complete in October 2020, Economy Parking Lot C and Economy Parking Lot B will be accessed from a new roadway connected to Aviation Parkway.

In November 2020, the airport will begin construction of a new $75 million parking garage and consolidated rental car facility. Parking Garage C, located adjacent to the terminal building, will offer 750 new public vehicle parking spaces and 750 ready-return rental car spaces. The garage’s public parking section will offer time-saving Park Assist technology allowing customers to quickly locate available spaces. The rental car portion will include a spacious transaction lobby and reserved spaces for premium rental car customer vehicle pick-ups. Construction on Parking Garage C is expected to be complete in the Fall of 2022.

The airport will also construct a new employee parking lot to be located on GSP Drive near the National Weather Service facility. Construction on this expanded parking area will be complete in Spring 2020.
