SC Governor’s School for Science & Math (GSSM) student Reed Studer, class of 2019, received the first place award in the high school division of the Art Education Association, Eastern Region Youth Art Month Competition. Studer’s artwork will go on to compete at the state level.
The award-winning piece, titled Fragile, was a still life in colored pencils and Mylar. “For this piece, I set up a still life of various items made of glass: a cup, marbles, some cologne, and a vase,” explained Studer. “After taking some pictures of it, I decided to draw and color it with some Prismacolor colored pencils. I went with glass objects partially because I wanted to see how well I could do with the challenge and because I believed that glass would be a good way to represent people in general. Glass, like a person, is fragile, and the littles of forces can cause it to break. I’m hoping that this piece can help others see that while we have the potential to crack and break, we have the option to stand strong and stay together just like the objects in this still life.”
Ms. Patz Fowle, Visual Arts Coordinator at GSSM, congratulates each of the student artists representing GSSM in the Youth Art Month Exhibition:
- Elizabeth Colmer, class of 2019
- Melinda Elser, class of 2019
- Nghia Nguyen, class of 2019
- Jenny Schaffer, class of 2019
- Reed Studer, class of 2019
