CHARLESTON, COLUMBIA, FLORENCE, GREENVILLE, SC & WASHINGTON, DC – March 24, 2009 – Haynsworth Sinkler Boyd attorney John Adams Hodge is serving as a judge for the Philip C. Jessup International Law Moot Court Competition, held March 22-28, held in Washington. This is the world’s largest moot court competition, now in its 50th year, with law students participating from over 500 law schools in more than 80 countries.
Based in the law firm’s Columbia office as Special Counsel, Hodge concentrates his practice on environmental, regulatory and aviation law. He is also a registered Professional Geologist and former staff attorney for the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control. He drafted the first Brownfield agreement in South Carolina and has worked on hundreds of transactions that have resulted in the resolution of environmental liabilities.
For more than 20 years, the University of South Carolina Law School graduate has represented clients before federal and state environmental agencies and also before the National Transportation Safety Board, the Federal Aviation Administration and in state and federal trial and appellate courts. The Duke University graduate is an Adjunct Professor at University of South Carolina Department of Environmental Health Sciences and is a published author on a variety of topics. He has also served as a judge for the International Environmental Moot Court Competition.
According to organizers, this competition is a simulation of a fictional dispute between countries before the International Court of Justice, the judicial organ of the United Nations. A team from each law school will work all year long on this year’s Jessup Problem, preparing oral and written pleadings arguing both the applicant and respondent positions of the case. Students first compete in national and regional competitions, held earlier in the year, to earn the right to advance to the world championship Shearman & Sterling International Rounds held every spring in Washington, D.C. As the chair of the Greater Piedmont Chapter of the Explorers Club in South Carolina, Hodge also represented the Chapter at the Club’s Annual Dinner and meeting held in New York on March 20-21. This is an international multidisciplinary professional society dedicated to the advancement of field research, founded in 1904. The Club provides assistance in expedition planning, awards fieldwork grants to scientists, writers, and photographers, and at its annual dinners, and honors accomplishments in exploration.
