Healthy Learners Midlands Advisory Board Challenges You to Count Your Blessings This St. Patrick's Day

February 25, 2009

COLUMBIA, SC – February 25, 2009 – The Healthy Learners Midlands Advisory Board challenges you to count your blessings this St. Patrick’s Day and to help provide health care services to a child in need for just $10.00.

Many of us don’t realize how blessed we are to be able to visit a doctor or dentist when we are sick or for routine check ups, but access to health care is a blessing. Imagine for a moment that you are a child with a toothache, but your parents cannot afford to take you to a dentist…you can’t concentrate in class, and your grades prove it. That is the case for many of the children served by Healthy Learners. They have never visited a doctor or dentist, nor have they had their eyes examined. Their working parents make slightly too much to qualify for Medicaid, but don’t earn enough to purchase private health insurance. Statistics show that a healthy child has a greater chance of learning and being successful. For just ten dollars you can share your good fortune with a Healthy Learners child by purchasing a raffle ticket.

The Healthy Learners Midlands Advisory Board is hosting a St. Patrick’s Day Fundraiser to include a raffle and drawing that will be held at The Roof Top compliments of The Sheraton Columbia Downtown Hotel on Tuesday, March 17, 2009. The event will begin at 5:30 pm and the drawing will be held at 7:00 pm. You do not have to be present to win. Raffle tickets will be sold by participating Midlands Advisory Board members and Healthy Learners employees for a month leading up to the event. Prizes include a two night stay at a Folly Beach condo, a New Year, New You package, a golf package and a Connected Professional package. The cost of an individual ticket is $10.00 or three tickets may be purchased for $25.00. To purchase raffle tickets contact a Healthy Learners Midlands Advisory Board member or employee or visit www.firstgiving.com/healthylearners.

About Healthy Learners

Healthy Learners is a best practice model that provides services to children who are identified by their school nurse as having unmet health needs and are determined to be unable to pay for such services. Through partnerships with local health care providers, who offer their services at a reduced rate, Healthy Learners is able to provide the services at no cost to the families or schools.

Healthy Learners services include vision care, dental care, hearing evaluations, assistance with prescription medications, clinical counseling and episodic care for other health concerns. Transportation to and from school to appointments is a unique and vital link to the success of the Healthy Learners program. Healthy Learners Midlands serves all elementary and middle schools in Richland School Districts One and Two and Lexington School Districts Two and Four.
