HMT needs 160 tutors to help over 130 students in CCSD schools

Heart Math Tutoring is looking for volunteer tutors (https://heartmathtutoring.org/charleston/) to support over 130 Charleston students during the 2023/24 school year!

Heart Math Tutoring (“HMT”) is a nonprofit organization committed to helping students in elementary schools develop a strong foundation in math and enthusiasm for academics. After completing a successful year at Ladson Elementary and Matilda F. Dunston Elementary, HMT is excited to expand its impact to serve additional students at Sanders Clyde Creative Arts Elementary, and we need your help!

The Need for Math Support in Charleston

Just 54% of fourth grade students in Charleston County School District (CCSD) met or exceeded grade level expectations on 2022 SC College-and-Career-Ready Assessments.[1] Tutoring has been found to deliver significant gains in recent studies[2] and was recommended in the January 2021 report by the SC Education Oversight Committee upon reviewing South Carolina students’ academic needs exacerbated by the pandemic.

As an HMT tutor, your addition makes a difference! During the 2022/2023 school year, 98% of Charleston HMT students met or exceeded program growth goals in math. 100% of surveyed Charleston HMT tutors rated their experience positive and 96% of teachers reported they saw improvement in their student’s confidence and enthusiasm for learning on a year-end survey. The HMT program proved successful in Charlotte, NC before expansion to Charleston. See historical results here. (https://heartmathtutoring.org/what-we-do/results/)

 Volunteering with Heart Math Tutoring

HMT volunteers commit to weekly tutoring sessions that last either 30 minutes or one hour from late September to early May (~20-25 sessions). Not a “math person”? Not a problem! Advanced math knowledge and tutoring experience are not required. All students are in grades 1-5, and Heart provides a structured, activity-based curriculum with on-site support at every session. If you can do basic math and have a passion for helping kids, you can tutor with HMT. Volunteer opportunities are available at three schools in Charleston County this year. We invite you to check out our school locations and available tutoring times. (https://heartmathtutoring.org/charleston/)

Already signed up to tutor? Please help Heart spread the word about this opportunity! See Heart’s “Recruit a Tutor” page for ideas on how to encourage your friends and colleagues to become a tutor. For employers and civic groups, our team would be happy to host an information session for interested employees and members. Please contact [email protected] for more information!

“My students look forward to their time with the tutors. Not only did I see an academic benefit, I feel that the social emotional components were supported by the one-on-one time. They felt important and seen.” -Fourth Grade Teacher, Ladson Elementary

About Heart Math Tutoring

Heart Math Tutoring (HMT) is a nonprofit with a mission to ensure that all elementary students develop the strong foundation in math and enthusiasm for academics needed for long-term success, by helping schools use volunteers as tutors. Community members commit one hour per week to deliver an effective, hands-on curriculum through one-on-one tutoring sessions during the school day in elementary schools. Heart focuses its support on students who lack resources to access private tutoring. Founded in Charlotte, NC, HMT launched its first new region, Charleston, SC, in 2022.
