Heart Math Tutoring Charleston seeks volunteer tutors to support students during 2024-25 school year
August 12, 2024HMT needs 200 tutors to help over 180 students in CCSD schools
Heart Math Tutoring is looking for volunteer tutors (https://heartmathtutoring.org/charleston/#volunteer) to support over 180 students in Charleston during the 2024/25 school year.
Heart Math Tutoring (“Heart”) is a nonprofit organization committed to helping students in elementary schools develop a strong foundation in math and enthusiasm for academics. Entering its third year working with students in Charleston County School District, Heart will be serving students at four elementary schools: Charleston Progressive Academy, Ladson Elementary, Matilda F. Dunston Elementary, and Sanders-Clyde Elementary.
Urgent Need for Math Support in Charleston
Recent data shows that only 54% of fourth-grade students in Charleston County School District met or exceeded grade-level expectations on the 2023 SC College-and-Career-Ready Assessments[1]. With the academic challenges exacerbated by the pandemic, tutoring has proven to be a vital intervention. A 2021 report by the SC Education Oversight Committee highlights the significant gains tutoring can offer in addressing these gaps[2].
Make a Difference as a Heart Tutor
During the 2023-24 school year, 108 volunteers contributed 1,707 hours of one-on-one tutoring to Heart students in Charleston. As a result, 99% of these students met or exceeded their math growth goals, with nearly 90% of teachers reporting noticeable improvements in their students’ confidence and enthusiasm for learning. Additionally, 96% of Heart tutors rated their experience positively.
Heart volunteers commit to weekly tutoring sessions lasting 30 minutes to an hour from late September through April, amounting to roughly 20-25 sessions. No advanced math knowledge or prior tutoring experience is required—just a willingness to help students succeed. Heart provides a structured, activity-based curriculum and on-site support at every session, making it easy for anyone who can do basic math to get involved.

About Heart Math Tutoring
Heart Math Tutoring (HMT) is a nonprofit with a mission to ensure that all elementary students develop the strong foundation in math and enthusiasm for academics needed for long-term success, by helping schools use volunteers as tutors.
