Heirloom Book Company Opens On Lower King Street

Culinary bookstore will sell new, used and out of print literature dedicated to food arts
CHARLESTON, SC – March 30, 2011 – Inquisitive cooks, food lovers and chefs alike will flock to lower King Street this spring with the arrival of Heirloom Book Company, a bookstore devoted exclusively to the culinary arts.
Located in the King Street Antique District at 123 King, the bookstore will open April 1 and offer an extensive selection of rare, out-of-print and new books, alongside prints, photographs, vintage first-editions and other unique novelties – all catering to the food arts. Heirloom Books will house thousands of publications relating to a breadth of subjects, from the perfect Southern cookbook, to literature about haute cuisine, international eats, at home beer brewing, cooking vegan and gluten-free, the art of wine pairing, farm-to-table favorites, craft cocktails and more.
The unique bookstore is the creative vision of Brad Norton and Bryan Lewis of the Palmetto Distributing Company, a wine, beer and spirits distributor. Norton has been an avid cookbook collector for the last 15 years, with a private collection of more than 4,000 rare books about food and wine. A majority of the books will come directly from Norton’s personal collection. He says of the venture, I’ve always been passionate about food arts and endeavored to learn all I could through books when I couldn’t travel to taste the food in person. My partners and I are pleased to share this passion with a great food town such as Charleston.
Rounding out the Heirloom team is Carlye Dougherty who has served as executive editor of Kiawah Island’s Legends magazine since 2009. Dougherty will run the store’s day-to-day operations as well as manage creative and web development and coordinate events in the store. Heirloom plans to have regular classes, demonstrations, art showings and author signings in the store.
Only the fifth of its kind in the country Heirloom Books will also add a small garden shop to and serve as a distribution pick-up for Community Supported Agriculture programs also known as CSA.
