Help the Lowcountry Food Bank fight hunger during Hunger Action Month in September
September 2, 2019In the 10 counties of coastal South Carolina, more than 200,000 of our neighbors struggle with hunger every day and may not know where they’ll find their next meal. Hunger affects many people – like Alana, who works full-time as a medical assistant. Even with her income and her husband’s part-time job, they still struggle to put food on the table and support their two daughters. It also affects 7-year-old Iliana, who wants to be a doctor when she grows up because she wants to help people – just like the Kids Cafe after school program helps her get the nutritious food she needs to thrive.
That is why, in September, the Lowcountry Food Bank (LCFB) joins Feeding America food banks across the country to take part in Hunger Action Month, which inspires people to take action and raise awareness that 41 million Americans, including 12.5 million children and 5.5 million seniors, are food insecure.
“It’s important that the people we serve in our community have access to nutritious food so they can reach their full potential and live healthy lives,” said Pat Walker, LCFB President and CEO. “People facing hunger are often our neighbors; kids in our children’s classes or seniors on our block who have raised their own children — often much closer to us than we think. Every action we take counts toward fighting hunger. Together, we can fight hunger one helping at a time.”
The LCFB has many activities planned to engage our community in hunger relief and awareness building, including:
September 7: HAM FAM DAY, a family volunteer session for families and children ages 6 and up from 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.
September 12: Hunger Action Day Sip and Stretch yoga event from 6:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m.
