Historic Columbia announces Spirits Alive!

September 28, 2017

Historic Columbia’s annual guided tours of Elmwood Cemetery, which began in July, come to a close with Spirits Alive! on Thursday, October 12. Tours run every 30 minutes beginning at 6 p.m. The last tour will begin at 8:30 p.m.

Unlike regular monthly tours, the special Spirits Alive! event includes multiple costumed guides stationed around Elmwood Cemetery for tours, children’s crafts, light snacks and other Halloween-related activities. Historic Columbia recommends that attendees bring a flashlight to enjoy tours later in the evening.

“So many people drive past Elmwood Cemetery every day without realizing what a historic treasure it is,” says James Quint, Historic Columbia’s director of education. “We encourage those who want to learn more about this beautiful cemetery to join us for Spirits Alive! and discover the incredible stories of life, love and intrigue Elmwood offers.”

Tickets are $12 for adults, $6 for youth (17 and under), and $8 for Historic Columbia member adults and $4 for member youth. Tickets are on sale online or by calling 803.252.1770 ext. 23. Admission includes a tour of Elmwood Cemetery, light snacks and a take-home craft for children, and all proceeds benefit Historic Columbia For more information, visit historiccolumbia.org, emailreservations@historiccolumbia.org or call (803) 252-1770 x 23.

About Historic Columbia:

In November 1961, a small group of individuals intent on saving the Ainsley Hall House from demolition officially incorporated as the Historic Columbia Foundation. Over the next five decades the organization, which was founded on the premise of preservation and education, would take on the stewardship of seven historic properties in Richland County. Today, the organization serves as a model for local preservation efforts and interpretation of local history.
