Historic Mansion at 1 Meeting St. sells for $4.2 million

September 3, 2015

CHARLESTON, SC – A 19th-century mansion on the Charleston peninsula sold Sept. 2. Paula Yorke, an agent with William Means Real Estate, represented the buyer in the sale of 1 Meeting St. for $4.2 million.

Built in 1846, this single-family, brick home overlooks White Point Garden in the South of Broad area. Known as the George Robertson House, the home includes the footprint of the main level drawing and withdrawing rooms, kitchen and entry.  The second floor with 14 foot ceilings acted as the ballroom. It has eight bedrooms, six full bathrooms plus towering ceilings with the original moldings, period floors, fireplaces and triple grand piazzas with views of the Charleston harbor. The main house also has a functioning elevator that was installed in the early 20th century.

The entire property includes the five-floor home and a one-bedroom, 985-square-foot apartment. Additionally a one-bedroom carriage house is 999 square feet. The total square footage of the property is more than 12,000.

The new owner – who has won awards for historic restoration in other cities – is planning a complete and extensive restoration of the home, carriage house and grounds, Yorke said. Once completed, the property will be three residences – one of which will be occupied by the owner with the other two available for sale.

Earlier this year approval from the City of Charleston Board of Zoning Appeals was given to separate the home into three residences.
