Hold Up On The Suede, Sweaters & Scarves – Summer’s Not Over Yet
August 6, 2015By Brian Maynor
Every August focus and attention turns to back-to-school and fall previews, but here in the South we have plenty of summer days left to endure.
With August being one of the hottest months of the year, it’s a little difficult for some to start thinking about suede, sweaters and scarves. While we can’t control the retail cycle it’s not too late to invest in some summer staples at amazing end-of-year deals. Here are few things to keep an eye out for that you can wear now and later:
1. Tailored shorts. Weekends wouldn’t be complete without spending some time in shorts, but the kind of shorts you wear says a lot about you, and not all shorts are the same. If you want to keep a well-groomed look choose shorts that are tailored. The slim silhouette reads more polished as does a solid, uniform color, even if you pair them with a simple jersey t-shirt. The same can’t be said for a pair of broken-in, a.k.a. worn-out, chino shorts.
2. Short-sleeve shirts. Whether you like polo shirts or short-sleeve button-ups now is the perfect time to stock up and replace your supply. You will be able to wear them as standalone pieces for the next couple of months and after that they work great as transition pieces under blazers and sweaters. Don’t let your favorites of the season slip away because you know you won’t find them again.
3. Fabric belts. These bright, fun and colorful accents are everywhere during the summer months, but they work the same all year. Adding it to a fall or winter outfit is one of the easiest ways to brighten it up, but good luck finding one if you wait until then to find one.
4. Lightweight pieces in neutral and darker shades. Another trick to extend your summer wardrobe is picking up pieces in neutral and darker colors like black, white, navy and grey. Commonly called summer drabs, these jersey, linen and silk pieces will add great texture and complimenting layers to wools, tweeds and cashmere for future looks.
5. Accessories. End-of-season sales are a great time to round out your jewelry, bag and shoe collection. While some pieces are seasonal, most of them aren’t and the percentage off beats any sale through the year. So don’t bypass the accessories when you hit the sale racks.
August may mark the retail season for back-to-school and fall previews, but let’s not kid ourselves, there is still plenty of summer sun left. So don’t be afraid to pick up some investment pieces at the end-of-season sales. You have plenty of time to wear it now and later in the year.
